The brief:
standing out in a crowded niche
The true crime and unsolved mystery genre is one of the most saturated spaces on YouTube. The challenge wasn't just telling a good story; it was building a recognizable, premium brand that could instantly capture and hold attention.
Fireside Unsolved is my personal proving ground—a project where I serve as the entire production agency. From the initial brand conceptualization to the final frame of the video edit, this channel is a living portfolio of my ability to turn complex, mysterious narratives into highly engaging visual content.
The Foundation:
Research & Scriptwriting
Before a single pixel is pushed or a frame is cut, the story has to be bulletproof. Every video on Fireside Unsolved begins with rigorous research into true crime cases, unexplained phenomena, and mysterious historical artifacts.
Narrative Structure: I distill hours of deep-dive research, historical documents, and complex timelines into tight, engaging scripts. The writing process focuses heavily on pacing—hooking the viewer in the first 30 seconds, building suspense organically, and treating sensitive, real-world subjects with the respect they deserve.
Writing for the Edit: I don't just write for voiceover; I script with the final visual and audio experience in mind. Whether mapping out an intricate, multi-suspect timeline for Episode 117 or breaking down complex historical context for Episode 210, every paragraph is written to explicitly queue up specific motion graphics, sound design swells, and visual transitions.
Brand Identity & Graphic Design
The visual language of true crime needs to walk a fine line between suspenseful and respectful. I developed a cohesive brand identity anchored in moody, cinematic tones that instantly set a mysterious atmosphere. Beyond the core branding, I design highly optimized, custom YouTube thumbnails for every episode, utilizing A/B testing principles and strong visual hierarchy to drive click-through rates.
Motion Graphics & Animation
Static images don't hold attention. To keep viewers engaged during deep dives into unexplained phenomena and historical mysteries, I heavily utilize custom motion graphics. By bringing old maps to life, animating document reveals, and creating dynamic lower-thirds and custom intros, I transform complex information into visually compelling evidence.
Video Editing
& Pacing
Great storytelling is made in the edit. My workflow focuses on maintaining a tight narrative pace that builds suspense and holds viewer retention. I blend meticulous cuts with immersive sound design—balancing voiceover, ambient music, and sound effects—to create an atmosphere that keeps the audience hooked from the opening hook to the final fade-out.
